Hi Dr Braverman,

I am a 44 year old lady from the United Kingdom. i have been married for 15 months we have been actively trying for a baby for a year now. We have both been married before and have two children each. I had two miscarriages in 1997 and have suffered three blighted ovums this year. The first one was at three months, the second about nine weeks and the third has been at 5 weeks. I have medical miscarriages for the first two last year and the second time miscarried naturally. I have been to the hospital for various blood tests and internal examinations they cant find a chromosome problem between us but it keeps happening. Because my husband and I are over 40 and have previous children I dont think the NHS in England will help us and I am unclear as to whether IVF will actually prevented blighted ovum. I mentioned to the consultant that I had read about baby aspirin and progestrone assisting could help but he was very dismissive. The hospital has now closed the file. My Doctor says thats most unhelpful and I should go back to the hospital.

I have been borderline diabetic for years but never had to take any medication but I have to ensure that I dont let my blood sugar drop.

My last miscarriage was on 17th December, 2011.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thabn

There are certainly many reasons that we could look into that would explain your recurrent miscarriages. Of course at this time your age is a significant factor(which was probably not the case when you started trying). I can complete the workup for you and at least give you answers . I will be able to help you design a treatment plan that will give you a "chance" , but again at 44 it is very difficult to get a genitically normal embryo. Feel free to call my office and schedule a consultaton by telephone or skype and I would be happy to assist you.

thank you for your prompt response. I am unsure of the time difference where you are to enable me to schedule a call. I do not have skype at work but I do at home. I have completed your patients questionnaire on line yesterday to assist and will gather my skype details and send these to you.

I have contacted my Doctor again to ask him to re-refer me to the Hospital to see if they will reopen my file. Although in England I think my age is against me in relation to any treatment under the National Health Service.

I do a pregnancy test today it was negative, feel like time is of the essence.

Thank you for your time

Many thanks for your quick response greatly appreciated. I have filled in on line a patients questionnaire.

I have asked my Doctor to re-refer me to the Hospital as the Consultant closed the file. I was not offered any further treatment after the second miscarriage last year and then I have gone on to miscarry about in December. I did express an interest in baby aspirin and progestrone at time of my last hospital appointment and this was dismissed as basically hearsay with no medical evidence to back it up and not suggested I take either. I had a serious of blood tests then my husband had further blood tests they have come back normal. I had a pelvic internal examination and this again was normal I was booked for another scan and by that time had become pregnant so the case was closed. At 9 weeks they decided they were incorrect when they had decided there was a fetus and I was told again the egg was empty and yolk sac had been reabsorbed. I was then asked whether I wanted a medical miscarriage which I opted for this was September 2011.

In December 2011 I miscarried at five weeks. I havent had a period since but I did take a test today as my period is late and this is negative. The problem dosent seem to be getting pregnant its the fact that the egg is always blighted. I would welcome any suggestions but appreciate that it wont be easy as I live in the UK. The NHS here dont provide IVF after a certain age. Begining this think its all hopeless.

I only have skype at home and will send through the contact details. I am unsure of the time difference of when to call your office and speak to you.

Thank you for your kindness.
