Hi Dr Braverman,

I was wondering if you could please explain a few things for me.
I have included a little history:

  • I am 33 years old and had Thrombocytopenia my whole live.
  • I had a Pulmonary Embolism at 22, and was positive for smooth muscle antibodies, negative for Lupus.
  • I had two miscarriages in the last 2 years.
  • Test Results for the last 8 months indicated Anti-beta2Glycoprotein repeatedly elevated at around 24-30 .
  • IgG and IgM were normal (upper) limit.
  • Therefore I was diagnosed with Antiphospholipid Syndrome by my doctor.
  • Recently another doctor tested me for various issues and said that I had the Pro-Thrombin Gene Mutation.

I am just trying to get my head around these issues and would like to know:

  • Antiphospholipid Syndrome is associated with Thrombocytopenia - how is that?
  • Is there a correlation between the Pro-thrombin gene mutation and thrombocytopenia and elevated Autoimmune Antibodies?
  • Does the Pro-thrombin Gene Mutation cause Thrombocytopenia, or does the body try to compensate with lower platelets to counteract the hypercoagulability?
  • I heard about IgG food sensitivity testing and was wondering if that would be useful in determining if food allergens could possibly be the culprits in causing the auto-immune antibodies in the case of Anti-beta2 Glycoprotein antibodies.

Thank you very much for your time.

Kind regards,
Maggie

It sounds like your all over the place here. Yes you can have thrombocytopenia with APS, cause is not clear, but I would suspect from agglutination of platelets "sticking" togehter eventually lowers their counts. Here is a reference for you.

If you are having any issues with this as it relates to pregnancy loss I suggest you call me as there are many issues that need to be studied and resolved in a clear fashion. Its all very treatable.

Good Luck , I hope this helps.
