Blighted Ovum Treatments

A blighted ovum is a form of miscarriage that involves the embryo ceasing to grow at a very early stage and disintegrating or failing to develop at all. However, a gestational sac does develop, and the woman's body does not recognize that the baby is actually missing. Medical specialists believe that the phenomenon of blighted ovum is likely the result of abnormalities in the chromosomes of the fertilized egg. A study reviewed the genetics of miscarriages caused by blighted ovum and found that abnormal chromosomes were present in 67% of the cases reviewed. However in about one third of the patients that have suffered a blighted ovum a genetic abnormality can not be assigned and other causes MUST be found. The most common cause of blighted ovum where the embryo is found to be normal by genetic testing is Immune rejection and these problems CAN be treated. It is important then if you have suffered multiple blighted ovums or if a D and C shows that at least one was genetically normal(euploid), that you seek our consultation for a full immune evaluation , as many times there is an underlying and yet undiagnosed autoimmune issue that CAN be treated.
