A recently published study has shown that patients that fail to produce T cells with a CD28 marker loose their ability to "delete" or 'destroy" T cells that are normally programmed to attack the paternal(fathers) genes on the invading embryo. That is , any time an embryo implants the mothers immune system ALWAYS makes T cells that are programmed to attack the embryo , but a special line of T cells with a CD28 marker on them are necessary to "delete" or "destroy" this attacking group of T cells. When the CD28 T cells are low in number or absent in animal studies this has almost ALWAYS led to immune rejection of the pregnany.
We have recently added this test to our immune profile and it is now one more of the many cells we look at here at Braverman Reproductive Immunology to help us decide if the immune system is playing a part in the pregnancy losses so many of our patients present to us with.

Basically we are turning off the cells that have been programmed to attack the embryo, becuase the normal mechanisms that should perform this function are not working properly. Failre for the embryo to turn off the maternal immune system is what leads to the majority of immune rejections of pregnancy. We have developed many therapies to perform this function.
