Dear Dr. Braverman,

My husband and I have experienced 3 early pregnancy losses. The first was at about 11 weeks. It took 2 years after that to get pregnant again. My doctor ordered an early ultrasound and we saw a strong heart-beat at around 8 weeks. A week later we lost that pregnancy as well, the baby had stopped developing apparently right after the ultrasound. The third pregnancy was much quicker in coming, but ended up being a blighted ovum. I have had initial blood-work done and all came back normal.
I requested to have my Vitamin D tested because my mother and 2 sisters have low vitamin D. Mine was at 13 and for the last 8 weeks I've been on 1000 IU of sub-lingual vitamin D. My doctor assured me that the vitamin D had nothing to do with my losses, but I have seen some research that suggests otherwise. I thought I'd ask you what, if any, link there is between pregnancy loss and low D. I saw some information on your site, but not that answers my question. Thank you so much!

Yes Vitamin D interacts with NK cells to deactivate them , low levels are associated with a high level of NK activity which can be one of the reasons for your losses. However I would still suspect that is not the primary reason and with your history you should have a full immune workup to determine the cause of your lossses. I would be happy to assist you if you would like.
