Immunology Blood Testing while Pregnant

Dr. Braverman,

I have filled out my patient forms and am getting ready to begin steps for the immunology blood workup with you. I have 2 questions:

1. I am currently going through my 5th pregnancy loss. Does it matter if I do your full bloodwork up while still technically pregnant or do I have to wait until my HCG level drops to below 5? And with that said, if I have to do methotrexate for this pregnancy, can I do the blood work up while taking that?

2. Do you require the full blood work up even if I've had some of my own somewhat extensive immunology testing?

I look forward to meeting you in person and discussing my case, which my doctor has now told me is very 'perplexing', which is never good to hear. :/ I have already been treated in my pregnancy with prednisone, baby aspirin, lovenox, and had so so many tests to rule everything out.

Anyway, I'm eager to meet with you- you are my last hope and I've heard great things so I am hanging on to some hope during this terrible time. Thank you in advance for your time.

Thank you for the kind words. Yes it is actually better to get the testing while pregnant so I can see the reaction of the immune system to the pregnancy and maybe explain the immunologic reasons for the loss. It can not be done after you have had MTX so you should try and get the testing prior to that. The decision to take MTX of course is between you and your current doctor. Most of the pateints here have the diagnosis of "perplexing" so that is not unusual for me. Im sure I can provide you with answers.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Last question: If I can get a flight, is it ideal to do all the bloodwork with you directly asap- while I'm still 'pregnant'? In other words, I suppose the question is, can I get the full blood work up in one or 2 days or does it need to be done at different times in the cycle. Upon payment and filling the forms, would this be easy to schedule with you? Thank you again so much.

Stefanie
