Now up to nine (9!!) miscarriages.... Posted on: Oct 5, 2011 at 12:00am
Hi Dr. B,

I might just be your most difficult case. My first pregnancy (unplanned) was in 2007 with a baby boy born with gastroschisis. He unfortunately died from surgical complications as he had trouble clotting (had platelet issues). Other than that, he was chromosomally normal and perfect in every way. I then proceeded to have nine miscarriages in the years after that, most with heartbeats, two were BO. Of those tested, one came back Trisomy seven male, two were normal female.
I have no trouble getting pregnant on my own or through IVF (attempted for PGD). Super IUI didn't work for me at all though (Dr thought it would increase my odds). I have been to three REs. The first telling me my eggs were rotten after an unsuccessful IVF with PGD and to move on to donor eggs. The second RE found that I was compound hetero MTFHR, DQAlpha match to my husband and slightly elevated NK cells. We did IVF with him and added dexamethisone and lipids to cycle. Fresh didn't take, frozen ended in BO. Went to a third RE who would only take my case if I'd consider donor eggs, which I would, just not sold on whether they'd stick. Both my husband and I are normal karyotype. I guess my question is am I a candidate for using my own eggs or should I move on to donor eggs? I just turned 40 so I'm getting nervous that this may be the end of the journey. Is there anything else you would test for or do differently? I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Thank you.

Oh I am so sorry for all your losses, beleive it or not I have patients with twice as many losses prior to seeing me.(look for their stories on the boards). As I mentioned above and on the website, these complications after a first born male although not common are not unusual. Many times they are the result of whats called an HY restricting allele in the mother.(look on the website for details). But when mom has this HLA trait she can miscarry each time after a first born male. There are certainly other reasons for these types of histories that can be triggered by any pregnancy. Yes I think you still have a chance to conceive with your own eggs, as many patients that have come to see me were told the same, i.e. that they needed donor eggs because no one understood the mechanism for the losses. Please call me so that I can help you.
