Prednisone Treatment for Recurrent Miscarriage

Options to Prevent Miscarriages

Many cases of multiple miscarriages are based on the immune response of the woman's body. When immunologic causes are identified as the source of an inability to get pregnant and carry to full-term, prednisone is often a viable solution to the problem. This steroid is an anti-inflammatory which acts to suppress certain functions of the immune system, thereby allowing the embryo to develop to a point where it can defend itself against antibodies which might otherwise be the causes of miscarriages.

Reproductive Immunology Clinic: Treating Miscarriages

First, Dr. Braverman will conduct a consultation with you to determine whether you should be prescribed prednisone, and we will work out a program designed to help you achieve success after multiple miscarriages. Dr. Braverman will educate you in all aspects of the program, ensuring that you and your partner understand what is expected of you. He wants you to both be active participants in the treatment. Next, he will brief your local doctor on the program, including any necessary information about the use of prednisone in reproductive immunology treatment.

Over the course of the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy, Dr. Braverman will be in contact to monitor your progress. Most of our patients are weaned off prednisone between 8-14 weeks. During the treatment you will have to monitor your blood sugars and watch for any signs of infection or fever. Some women experience mood changes, sleeplessness, weight gain and acne as side effects. The goal of getting pregnant after a miscarriage is normally enough to justify these symptoms.
