Dear Dr. Braverman,

I am looking forward to you opinion. I am 31 years old. I have had two miscarriages before 6 weeks (one that was missed until week 7) and I am currently miscarrying again (baby measuring 5 weeks 6 days and I am in my 7th week). All since June 2014. My D&C is scheduled for this week sometime. I miscarried naturally with the first two and my OB/Gyn did not have the tissue that I preserved tested. This time, I will have the tissue tested. I pray that it will provide some answers. With this last pregnancy, I took 300 mg of progesterone daily and low-dose aspirin daily. I also continued acupuncture. So far, no explanation for my losses. After the second loss, all blood testing and maternal/paternal karotyping were through my OB/Gyn. We both also had universal DNA screenings which only resulted in me being found to be a carrier of Cystic Fibrosis. A saline infused sonogram did not show any concern. I had a borderline ANA result, which was ultimately considered negative and my doctor did not believe it was necessary to follow up. I am being followed by an RE now (started with this pregnancy) and hope she will explore this piece again. I am wondering if this should be tested while I am still pregnant. The last ANA test was with a full panel of bloodwork and it was recommended that I wait 3 weeks after the second miscarriage to have it done so that my HCG levels returned to zero. I am not sure what more the RE can do and wonder if they will even explore autoimmune/alloimmune issues more thoroughly. They are well known for IVF success and while I am not ruling out IVF with PGS, I am not sure that is going to be the asnwer. I also don’t want this to be sold to me as my only option. After some research, I am wondering if prednisone may be helpful to me. With each pregnancy, I experienced significant bouts of right low back and right hip pain that went away a week or so before miscarriage. When I shared this with my doctors they just kind of shrugged and said don’t worry. Last weekend, before I knew my pregnancy stopped progressing, I fell ill. I ran a low fever, body aches, chills, and began with a cough. A few days later my cough progressed and my PCP diagnosed me with pneumonia. I am wondering if these symptoms are my body rejecting the pregnancy and are in fact related to that borderline ANA score. I also want to mention that my menstrual cycle is marked by significant blood clotting, sometimes the size of the palm of my hand. It seems to be worse since my last two miscarriages. Please share your opinion of my history. I am also interested in what other tests I may need to help my husband and I find some answers. Thank you kindly for your time.

Amy

You absolutely need a complete immune workup . I am sure your RE has success but with these cases they have no expereince . You do not need PGS and I do not recommend it. Please fill out a consultation request on the website and we can schedule a free 10 minute chat for you.
