I am a 41 year old woman and have hypothroidism for which I take 150mg of levothyroxine daily. I recently had a miscarriage at 8.5 weeks and in subsequent testing it turns out that although I have a normal TSH level (0.9 uU/ml) I have high levels of thyroid antibodies (TPO - 326 IU/Ml and ATG - 176 IU/ml) which my doctor says contribute to recurrent miscarriages. My question therefore is what can I do to prevent this? And do you know what women who are trying to conceive can do to lower their thyroid antibodies? My doctor mentioned that I may need to take 100 mg of aspirin to prevent blood clots but I also read that some patients take selenium. Has this been your experience and is this safe to take during pregnancy?

Hello , I wish it was as simple as taking selenium. You need a full immune workup as the prescence of the thyroid antibodies and your loss are just a sign that there is another immune issue. Baby aspirin alone is not the treatment in most cases. some require more aggressive therapies, but no conclusions can be reached until a full immune and thrombophilia panel have been done.
We can arrange for these tests from anywhere in the world. Please call my office to schedule a telephone cosultation, ask for Kim. Im sure I can help you.
