Poor Egg Quality: Elevated FSH or Low AMH
Have you been told you have poor egg quality or FSH issues?
At our clinic, we have encountered many patients who have been told they
have poor quality eggs and/or elevated levels of follicle-stimulating
hormone (FSH) or low levels of anti mullerian hormone(AMH). They are told
this is just due to "their genetics" and that nothing can be
done about it. This is very far from the truth and we have, in fact, had
great success in treating patients with a range of conditions that led
to this apparent situation of poor quality eggs. There may be underlying
reasons for elevated FSH or low AMH that can lead to
multiple miscarriages and failure to conceive which, when identified and treated, can allow
for a successful pregnancy.
Endometriosis is a common reason some patients experience elevated FSH or low AMH due
to oxidative stress and this can also be treated. We have found through
our extensive immune evaluation and vascular studies a condition we refer
to as "Silent Endometriosis" where patients do not have any
of the classic symptoms of pain. These patients often present to our clinic
with unexplained low AMH or elevated FSH not consistent with their age.
Proper surgical and immune therapy has led to successful pregnancies in
many of these cases. (See the endometriosis page on our website for my
presentation of Silent Endometriosis to the Endometriosis Foundation of
AMerica) .Other causes of elevated FSH or low AMH include a genetic predisposition,
which can be treated by stimulation protocols and supplements. Autoimmune
problems may cause a patient to develop antibodies to their own eggs and
early treatment can correct this.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) can be the underlying reason for poor quality eggs(In many of these cases
the AMH is actually much higher than expected, and patients are told that
it is "great" to be very high) With this condition, high levels
of insulin can interfere with the division of eggs, which can lead to
poor egg quality, failed fertilization or
early miscarriages. Other hormone complications of this syndrome can be toxic or otherwise
dangerous to developing eggs, resulting in failed conception or miscarriage.
Patients who have undergone IVF with PCOS may have experienced earlier
triggering to avoid hyper stimulation syndrome, affecting the quality
of eggs (due to immaturity) and poor fertilization and early miscarriages.
There are protocols to control these issues and improve embryo and egg
quality that we have tested and been successful with.
