Dendritic Cells and Macrophages

Treatment for Miscarriage as a Result of Dendritic Cells

Dendritic cells are immune cells that are found in the immune systems of all mammals. Their primary function is that of antigen-presenting cells, acting as messengers between innate and adaptive immunity in the human body. Macrophages are white blood cells that can function as both innate and adaptive immunity defense mechanisms. When a woman becomes pregnant, these dendritic cells and macrophages that reside in the uterine lining are typically programmed to be tolerant to the "invading" cells of the embryo. This tolerance is assisted by the pregnancy hormones Beta HCG and Progesterone.

There are, however, cases in which these antigen presenting cells do not initiate tolerance, this can be a result of an inherent inflammatory condition in the mother or genetic immune incompatabiltiy between the mother and father.. As a result, immune tolerance of the embryo may not be created, as the dendritic cells and macrophages may instead program the mothers immune system to attack the embryo which can lead to a miscarriage.
