So many patients call me or post on our website that they have been told if the have an "exact" or homozygous HLA DQ aplha match (especially a 4.1) that they would need a surrogate and could not carry a pregnancy.

I have continuoulsy posted that this is not true. We have gone through our 2010 data and found that of the 10 patients that had a homozygous DQalpha match (inlcuding 4.1) with our treatments 8 of those patients went on to have a baby!!

I hope this clears this up for everyone that this is a situation that can be successfuly treated without the use of a surrogate. The 2 patients that did not have a baby were egg quality issues and were not able to make a quality embryo for transfer.

Yes HLA matching is an issue without treatment and the number of matches is more important than homozygous matching(except as we have found, on the HLA C), but most cases can be successfully treated.

Hi Dr B

Can I ask what steps you are taking to share this vital information with the worldwide fertility community? I am based in the UK and have gone through the pain of infertility and miscarriage. I also have a full/partial DQa match with my husband. I know a lot of women (and Doctors) who are totally in the dark about HLA. I know it is a contentious subject and you have a business to run but surely your findings and treatments can be shared to assist women who simply cannot afford to travel to the States?

If you look at our latest blog we have gone into much more detail about HLA matching , this was posted on Facebook, and sent out as an email to all of the patients that have visited our website at some point.
We care for many patients who can not travel to the US. We perform SKYPE consultations, work with their local clinics , and now have an affiliate in Spain where patients can also go for care for all of their issues with Reproductive loss. We are soon opening another clinic in Greece as well.

Thank you for reply. I received and read the very interesting blog on HLA. There certainly seems to be a lot of exciting info behind the blog. However the detail in the blog does seem quite vague with no references to the research papers and naming of the specific problem HLA-C types. Is there any further reading on this issue that could help me and others take to our consultants as evidence?

Our data does not come from one single source this is why so few understand the complexities. We have tied this together from numerous articles. If any consultant needs help to evaluate these they or the patient can ask for our guidance. We treat many patients overseas and have affilates overseas that can help.
