Endocrine Disorders Causing Miscarriage

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Thyroid Disease & Diabetes

There are many endocrine disorders associated with recurrent pregnancy loss and failure to initiate and successfully complete a pregnancy. Most common of these is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) but other relevant conditions include thyroid disease, insufficient luteal phase, diabetes, and certain adrenal disorders similar to PCOS. PCOS is particularly complex in that it is not only an endocrine condition but it also involves thrombotic and immune issues.

The endocrine disorders are often caused by elevated levels of insulin and LH hormone and can affect egg quality and the function of the reproductive organs after ovulation. Other complications which can result in miscarriages can also be the result from untreated PCOS. Such issues can cause complications late in pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes. Complications with IVF, such as hyperstimulation, failure to implant or chemical pregnancies, can also be the result of undiagnosed or incorrectly treated PCOS.

Thyroid antibodies can cause immune rejection of pregnancy and therefore thyroid function and any related immune issues need to be thoroughly investigated. Inadequate progesterone can also cause problems with conception and pregnancy and although it can be difficult to detect, this can easily be treated with progesterone supplementation. Adrenal problems can result in overproduction or male hormone which can cause pregnancy complications they can mimic PCOS and are easily detected with simple testing.
