Miscarriage Causes | Treating Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
Causes of Recurrent Miscarriages
Recurrent miscarriages are one of the most emotionally stressful situations that you can ever find yourself experiencing. What can make this experience even more difficult is not knowing what the root cause is. For many women who have suffered multiple miscarriages, they have likely hit a lot of brick walls with medical professionals not knowing what is causing their inability to successfully initiate or complete a pregnancy. It could be that they have unexplained infertility issues, failed IVF cycles multiple times, or other types of miscarriage such as a chemical pregnancy. Regardless, not having the answers often equates to an inability to fix the problem.
We at BRI/ESSI are here to help solve that. We are led by Dr. Andrea Vidali, who is seen as a leading authority in the field of reproductive immunology – the study of how the immune system affects pregnancy, namely how it can be the cause of multiple miscarriages. His knowledge of this field has led to him helping women successfully maintain a pregnancy after miscarriages for decades.
What are the Common Causes of Pregnancy Loss?
Due to many years of experience, our center has unique expertise in understanding the immunological causes of miscarriages. We recognize that the immune system often plays a largely unrecognized role in a woman’s ability to successfully initiate and maintain pregnancy – and when it is not functioning properly, it can be a serious problem.
With a functioning immune system, when a woman becomes pregnant, an embryo is introduced to the body – which is initially perceived as being foreign. However, the embryo is able to suppress the immune system and eventually, the immune system takes actions to protect the baby. When defective, however, the immune system is not suppressed and the woman’s own body can end up attacking the embryo.
So what types of immunological causes can lead to miscarriages? There are many different factors, including but not limited to, the following:
- Antinuclear antibodies (ANA);
- Follicular fluid environment;
- Natural killer cells;
- Raynaud's disease; and
- Regulatory T cells
These can all play a part in causing a woman’s immune system to be defective and ultimately result in recurrent miscarriages. It is also important to note that while we focus on the immunological causes of miscarriage, we also recognize that there are non-immune causes. Situations such as endocrine disorders, genetic abnormalities, thrombosis, and toxic exposure can all contribute to recurrent pregnancy loss.
At our center, we strongly believe that you simply cannot be an expert in recurrent pregnancy loss unless you are an expert in all causes. Our center stands out as the first in New York to be authorized to use the name “Reproductive Immunology.” Why? Because we have proven to the NYS Department of Education that we possess an in-depth and specialized knowledge regarding this field. Since we are one of the few clinics nationwide with specialized knowledge of reproductive immunology, we are uniquely qualified to help you.
Why Surgical Evaluation May Be the Most Effective Next Step
After 30 years as a Reproductive Endocrinologist, our Medical Director Dr. Andrea Vidali understands the crucial role Endometriosis can play as an underlying condition causing multiple failures and pregnancy losses. Dr. Vidali has learned that for many patients, the missing link is not more testing—it’s a thorough surgical evaluation. Through expert excision of Endometriosis or correction of structural abnormalities, we’ve helped women who previously suffered repeated pregnancy losses have great success carrying healthy pregnancies to term.
As such, BRI/ESSI has evolved to become an Exclusive Endometriosis Treatment Center addressing the need for a hands-on and personal approach for the diagnosis and treatment of Endometriosis and the role it plays in Infertility.
While we no longer offer immunological testing or treatment services, our experience in this field continues to guide our understanding of the hidden drivers behind reproductive challenges. In particular, we have seen time and again how underlying conditions such as Endometriosis and Adenomyosis—often inflammatory in nature—play a critical role in reproductive failure and frequently go undiagnosed without surgery.
The Path Forward
If you have experienced:
- Recurrent miscarriage
- Multiple failed IVF cycles
- “Unexplained” infertility
- Or a family history of autoimmune or inflammatory disease
…then the next step may not be another lab test, but rather a thorough surgical evaluation with our team at ESSI.
We believe patients deserve more than vague answers like “bad luck.” Our center provides a clear, strategic path built on science, precision surgery, and compassionate care.
